Effective visualization of Stereo PIV vector fields of a turbulent boundary layer

چکیده
Stereo PIV datasets have three dimensional information over a plane, from which multiple quantities can be derived at each point. The task of visualizing these different parameters simultaneously is challenging, and this inhibits our ability to analyze and derive firm conclusions about the physics of the flow. Presently, the common approach is to view each parameter separately in different images. Such an approach is very inefficient, especially for large fields of view where many important structures and features co-exist. In this paper we discuss several different ways in which the primary quantities can be viewed simultaneously in the same image. The simplest method is to use different colors for each parameter and to overlay all the different colors on one image. The limitations of such an approach will be described. Other methods considered involve using texture generated from a line integral convolution (LIC) algorithm to convey instantaneous velocity direction and magnitude. Animated texture is also described, together with variants involving combined color and out-ofplane height. The use of height in tandem with color and animated texture is a useful method in distinguishing the different parameters in the regions of overlap. Dominant spanwise Fourier modes, and the existence of very large scale coherence in turbulent boundary layers
Multiple plane stereo PIV results and data from a rake of ten hot-wire probes are used to investigate the largest scale structures in a zero-pressure-gradient turbulent boundary layer. Instantaneous vector fields from stereo PIV in spanwisestreamwise planes reveal long lowand high-speed regions, with a length that often exceeds the viewing window (> 2δ). Also evident is a remarkable degree of s...
متن کاملThree dimensional structure characterization and visualization in a turbulent boundary layer
For decades, researchers have worked towards developing a suitable model to represent turbulent boundary layers. Based on PIV experiments in the x − z planes of a turbulent boundary layer, Adrian et al. [1] proposed a model based on a packet of “hairpin vortices” as a primary feature in turbulence transport and production (In this paper, streamwise, spanwise and wall-normal directions are along...

A high speed 3-D flow visualization system is synchronized with a 2-D particle image velocimetry (PIV) system to simultaneously capture instantaneous 3-D images with a 2-D PIV slice through the center of the measurement volume. Trials were performed on a zero pressure gradient (ZPG) turbulent boundary layer (Reθ ~ 4900) on the wall of a 2 ft x 2 ft open circuit wind tunnel. The experimental set...

متن کاملDirect measurement of fluid velocity gradients at a wall by PIV image processing with stereo reconstruction
Velocity gradient is typically estimated in Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) by differentiating a measured velocity field, which amplifies noise in the measured velocities. If gradients near a boundary are sought, such noise is usually greater than in bulk fluid, because of small tracer displacement, uncertainty in the effective positions of velocity vectors, intense deformation of tracer patte...
